BROADCAST JOURNALISM

Broadcast journalism was the hardest thing for me to get into. It was intimidating to me, but I'm glad I tried it. I will admit that it's not my favorite medium to do, but it is fun. What I have found a love for, however, is podcasting. I didn't expect to like it, but it's fun to do.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
VIDEO FEATURE

This package is one of my favorite publications

to this day. I did the video package on an assistant principal, Kari Roan, while another staff member wrote an accompanying feature story. It was my third video package, and it was great practice for my broadcast skills.

The whole package ended up winning a national Best of SNO award, and my video package individually won an "Excellent" award at the 2021 TAJE Fall Fiesta. I was overall proud of how it turned out.

WHAT COULD BE DONE BETTER:

  • I left her talking in the interview on the screen too long.

  • While there are a variety of shot types in the package as a whole, there was not a variety in the first part before Roan's interview.

  • In the voiceover, I say Roan "supports teachers and parents" while showing a plant. While I will admit that I find it hilarious looking back, I definitely should have used any other b-roll I had.

WHAT I'M PROUD OF:

  • This was my first time editing on Adobe Premiere and it went well (I edited my previous packages on the Adobe Premiere Rush app)

  • Roan was happy with our package as were other faculty members. The whole package also got popular in our community gaining over 750 views on our website.

  • I gained confidence and experience in both shooting and editing videoes.

ROBOTICS VIDEO PACKAGE

I debated for a while on whether or not I should include this video package in my portfolio just because of how bad it is. I ultimately decided to add it because I feel it shows my growth as a broadcast journalist compared to my video package on an assistant principal, Kari Roan.

This is my first video package, and I completed it with two other staff members. While the content isn't bad at all, the video is extremely shaky. I cringe looking at it now. We made the fatal mistake of not bringing tripods to shoot video.

Despite this, the video package has been integral in my growth in broadcast journalism as it was the small push I needed to feel more comfortable in videography. I could grow and learn from this point, as long as I had a tripod with me.

WHAT COULD BE DONE BETTER:

  • I could have brought a tripod and shot steady b-roll.

  • I stumbled over a word in my voiceover and I should have re-recorded it.

  • Maybe rearrange the interviews so the teacher spoke before the students.

  • The b-roll got a bit repetitive after a bit and I don't think I used enough different types of shorts, and the package could be improved with some more variety.

WHAT I'M PROUD OF:

  • This was my first time doing video at all and I learned a lot. This package was a stepping stone that allowed me to improve on my future packages.

  • The interviews were really good and it was pretty in-depth.

TAJE PACKAGE

I created this video package for my digital reporting workshop in the ILPC TAJE 2020 virtual summer workshop. Our assignment was to shoot and edit a video package on our phone (editing with the Adobe Premiere Rush app) in four hours. I based my video package on my fellow journalists in their conventions.

I was incredibly proud of this package, as it was my first one to come out great. I did this completely on my own in a short span of time.

My package won a "People's Choice in Video Feature Story" at the workshop and won an "Excellent" award for Video News Story at the 2021 TAJE Fall Fiesta. It was also posted on the TAJE social media accounts.

WHAT COULD BE DONE BETTER:

  • The background of the interviews could be better and less distracting.

  • Some b-roll videos were shaky.

WHAT I'M PROUD OF:

  • This was my first good video package and I'm so incredibly proud of it.

  • I learned a ton while making it and it helped me gain so much confidence in broadcast journalism.

PODCASTING

I've always been self-conscious about my voice, so I was scared to try podcasting. However, after encouragement from my friends, I decided to give it a try. To my surprise, I absolutely loved it. It's easy and simple. You sit down, and you just talk.

HISTORY'S FORGOTTEN

I joined the "History's Forgotten" podcast for its second season. I host it with my two friends, Caleb and Christi, and we talk about historical figures and facts that are not well known. This was the first podcast that I did and I was surprised to find that I really enjoyed it. It's essentially just talking to your friends which is, of course, super fun.

For this podcast, we write the whole script out beforehand, figure out who will say what, and then just record. We always banter or add our own opinions so it's not too formal or robotic.

OVER THE POPCORN BOWL

"Over the Popcorn Bowl" is a podcast I started with my three friends where we just review movies. We discuss new movies, seasonal movies or even iconic movies on their anniversary. This podcast is fun to record since we all are such great friends. It comes across in the podcast as we all laugh, joke and banter together. Right now, there are nine episodes of the series.

For this podcast, we each write out our opinions, and then we make a list of topics we want to discuss with no script. At the end, we give our personal ratings of the movie and discuss the Rotten Tomatoes rating as well.
